Calf Augmentation

What should you know about a calf augmentation? What happens during the first consultation?

The shape of the calf significantly determines the look of your whole leg. Due to genetic givens or deformities left from an accident the leg can be too thin and shapeless. Calf augmentation offers a solution to these problems. At the first consultation our plastic surgeon examines you, shows you the different types of implants and offers you a personalized recommendation concerning the plastic procedure.

Preparing for calf augmentation with calf implant

Before the calf augmentation you must attend a complete medical check-up. The reason for this is to find out whether you have any health problems that could have an influence on the calf augmentation. All preliminary examinations are made at our Plastic Surgery Institute, saving you the pains of queuing and waiting at other places. In the course of the examination laboratory tests, and when necessary, other examinations (ECG, X-ray, etc.) are performed on the basis of the suggestion of the plastic surgeon.

In certain cases a change in lifestyle is recommended in the days preceding the calf augmentation. To facilitate proper recovery, it is important that you do not smoke because nicotine slows down the processes of regeneration and harmfully influences the healing of the wound. In the days before the calf augmentation you should eat light food, drink lots of fluids and take some vitamins (vitamin C, selenium, zinc). Two weeks before the calf augmentation avoid the use of aspirin, ginko biloba and other naturopathic products.

Calf augmentation with calf implant

During the calf augmentation the insertion of the implant is performed through an incision in the popliteal about 4 centimeters long. At our Plastic Surgery Institute the most modern implants are applied, for which the manufacturer undertakes a lifelong guarantee. After the insertion the implants do not need to be changed, they can stay inside forever. We use American, German or Brazilian made implants. As for their shape, they can be anatomic or spindle shaped. The anatomic implants are usually recommended for men, the spindle shaped implants for women. The calf augmentation is performed under general anesthesia in all cases. The average duration of the calf surgery is 1 hour.

Techniques of calf augmentation

The technique of the operation means the choice and localization of the necessary incisions. The implant is inserted in an arse-upward position, under the muscle membrane of the calf through an incision made in the popliteal. At the end of the calf augmentation, the plastic surgeon uses dissolvable stitches. After the calf surgery a fixing strip is used.

Recovering and risks of calf augmentation

In our Plastic Surgery Institute we aim to make the period after the calf augmentation as comfortable as possible for you. After the calf surgery you must spend one night in our Plastic Surgery Institute. To achieve the perfect result and look we work with self-absorbing stitches, this way the scars heal much more aesthetically and we save you the possible inconveniences of the stitch removal. After the calf surgery you must wear a special fixing strip for 4 weeks. Out Institute provides you with these items of clothing.

During the first 2 weeks of the recovery all demanding physical activities must be avoided. After 2 weeks you can gradually return to your previous lifestyle. In the first week avoid climbing steps. Light exercises can be started after 4 weeks. Sunbathing, the use of solarium and sauna must be avoided for 2 months. After the calf augmentation you have to attend control examinations on the 7th and 14th day, and the 6th and 12th week. The recovery time of the outer scars is 2-3 weeks, while the inner scars heal completely in 18 months. The final shape is achieved in 6-8 months. To facilitate the healing of the wound it is advisable to use scar creams.

Before the calf surgery we aim to filter out the possible risk factors with preliminary examinations but even so unpredictable complications may occur. Calf augmentations count as routine plastic procedures. The chance for the occurrence of complications is extremely slight, but it cannot be excluded. These complications can be the following: infection, oedema, serous oedema, formation of the keloid scar, and asymmetry between the two calves.

Results of the calf augmentation with implant

The results of the calf augmentation are immediately visible, but the calf will only receive its final shape after half a year. Your legs will be more shapely, and the incision made during the calf surgery will remain almost invisible, so you can extend your wardrobe with clothes showing your knees.
