Lipofilling (Fat Transfer Facelift)

What should you know about Lipofilling (fat transfer facelift)? What happens during the first consultaion?

As we get older, it is the face that shows the first signs of aging. Above 40 years of age the facial skin becomes loose and sagging, the cheeks look rather sunken. Stress, environmental pollution, and the rays of the Sun also leave their mark on the facial skin. The passing of time also inavertibly causes some tissue atrophy and the fat content in our face loses some volume. This is especially so for those who have not taken on excess weight over the years; in their case the dropping of the cheek fat can be substantial.

Fat transfer facelift improves facial creases and hollows and volumizes the face. This is achieved using only organic materials, without causing allergic reactions, and without surgical incisions. Fat transfer facelift can be used to cosmetically enhance the lips and to fill in the glabellar lines (the wrinkles between the eyebrows) and well as the nasolabial folds (the areas of indented skin that run from the side of the nose down to the corners of the mouth). This treatment can also be used to correct scars.

During your first appointment you will be assessed and advised by our plastic surgeon, who will discuss the personalized possibilities with you. The surgeon also explains the different surgery techniques and makes a recommendation as to which technique is most suitable for you.

Preparing for lipofilling

Before a fat transfer facelift surgery you must go for a complete medical check-up. The reason for this is to find out whether you have any health problems that could influence the outcome of fat transfer facelift. All preliminary examinations are made at our Plastic Surgery Institute, so you do not need to queue up and wait in other health centers. The medical assessment includes laboratory tests and as occasion requires, other examinations (ECG, X-rays, etc.) according to the specialist's suggestion.

In certain cases we advise our patients to change their lifestyle in the days preceding fat transfer facelift surgery. To facilitate proper recovery, it is important that you do not smoke because nicotine slows down the process of regeneration and has a harmful influence on the healing of the wound. In the days before the fat transfer facelift you should eat light foods, drink lots of fluids, and take some vitamins (vitamin C, selenium, zinc). Two weeks before the fat transfer facelift you should avoid the use of aspirin, ginko biloba, and other naturopathic products.

Lipofilling (Fat transfer facelift)

Fat transfer facelift uses state-of-the-art technology. Fat cells taken from the patient's body, treated with the appropriate technique, and injected back into the patient is the safest and most ideal method to fill wrinkles. Fat transfer facelift can be very successful at improving the soft tissue balance within the facial features. This procedure can also tighten moderately loose skin. A significant amount of excess skin, however, cannot be treated with this method. Fat transfer facelift is performed under local anaesthetic and takes 1 hour to complete.

Techniques of lipofilling

In order to do a fat transfer facelift, we first perform liposuction to remove excess fat from the abdomen, the buttocks, or the hips. The fat cells in these areas are the ones that react most slowly to weight loss, which makes them ideal for fat transfer facelift. The fat cells are first allowed to settle, then they are filtered to separate out the intact healthy fat. This fat is then transferred to the treatment areas in the face. The injected fat cells settle in the face firmly. It is necessary to overfill the face a little because about 20 to 40% of the transferred fat cells are resorpted during the first few weeks, and only the rest persists long-term.

Recovery and the risks of lipofilling

In our Plastic Surgery Institute we aim to make the period after fat transfer facelift as convenient as possible for you. After fat transfer facelift you will be monitored by a physician for a couple of hours before returning home. After the procedure you can return to your work and other activities as usual. In a few cases some bleeding may occur under the skin, but this disappears after a few days. It is an advantage of this procedure that it doesn’t cause an allergic reaction. Fat transfer facelift is an autologous procedure, which means that only body-identical materials are used in the process. Due to the amount of fat cells transferred during a fat transfer facelift, the patient may appear to have taken on a few pounds, but this effect disappears after a couple of weeks. After a fat transfer facelift you have to attend control examinations on the 1st and the 6th week.

The results of lipofilling

After a fat transfer facelift the gaunt, tired look disappears from the face. The procedure gives you a healthy glow; the face looks fuller and younger. The contours of the face become sharper and the deep wrinkles disappear. The results of fat transfer facelift are immediately visible. If necessary, the treatment can be repeated after half a year. The injected fat cells are reabsorbed gradually over the course of 2 to 4 years.
