Ophthalmological Plastic Surgery

The surgical correction of malformations on the eyelids and the area around the eye should be done with utmost care as the eyelids, the shape of the eye-gap and the condition of the area around the eye fundamentally determines your facial profile.

Our team pays special attention to that scars formed after the surgical intervention (which will inevitably occur during the healing of a wound after an incision) should be hidden as much as possible in order not to disturb the harmony of your face.

Surgeries are done in local anaesthesia (during which local anaesthetic injection is administered subcutaneously with the use of a fine needle), and following this the intervention happens painlessly.

The Following Surgeries Are Performed The Most Frequently

If the skin of your upper eyelids becomes sagging, it means an aesthetic problem, in addition to this, the eyelids covering the eyelashes can make it more difficult to open your eyelids, whereas sagging lateral skin area may cause the lateral narrowing of the field of vision. By incising the sagging skin area, and restoring the upper eyelid fold the above problems may be helped.

If not only your eyelid skin is sagging but the elevating muscle of the upper eyelid is also weakened, then malposition of the upper eyelid, the so called ptosis occurs. The correction of ptosis is a more complex intervention as it affects not only the skin but the deeper structures as well. In most cases the appropriate surgical intervention means finding the weakened eyelid elevating muscle and restoring it to its original place. This intervention is performed through a fine incision made in the upper eyelid fold then the skin wound is closed.

Lower eyelid skin may become sagging as well. In such cases, depending on the type of malformation, various customized and agreed surgical interventions may be needed. In the case of a lower eyelid surgery, the condition of the eyelid (how tight or sagging the eyelid is) has to be taken into consideration in every case.

If lower eyelids turn in, entropion occurs, which is an eyelid malposition in which the eyelashes along the edge of the eyelid, turning toward the eye keep rubbing the eyeball surface, thus endangering its integrity. In this case correct eyelid position may be restored only by surgery, which provides a stable eyelid position again.

If lower eyelids turn out, ectropion occurs, which can cause not only aesthetic but lacrimation-related problems as well as in this case the lacrimal punctum is delocalized and the continuously produced tear cannot be drained through the original ducts towards the nose. This eyelid malposition can be corrected by surgical intervention as well. It is recommended to undergo this surgical intervention as soon as possible as the exposed and visible conjunctiva part of the eyelid that is pulled away from the eye is continuously inflamed, and it can become thick, which may make correction more difficult.

Papillae, birth marks, cysts and other benign or malignant tumours of a relatively small or great size may also form on the eyelid skin. These may need to be removed by surgery and undergo a histological examination. The surgery depends on the position of the skin malformation (where the distance from the edge of the eyelid is important) and the type of skin malformation. In some cases it is sufficient to remove the skin malformation with the skin, however, it also occurs that eyelid excision and eyelid reconstruction need to be done in the total thickness. You need individual consultation and agreement to determine the type of intervention.

The inflammation of eyelid glands in the acute phase may be cured by local dressing, antibiotic drops or ointments. If inflammation becomes chronic and the so called chalazion occurs, this may only be treated by a minor surgical intervention.

The removal of malpositioned eyelashes scratching the eyeball surface, with eyelids in the correct position is a special intervention. They may be pulled out mechanically as well, however, we can damage the stems of the malpositioned eyelashes with the use of the fine needle of the Ellman radiosurgical equipment which we use for skin surgery the most frequently and thus we can prevent the eyelashes from re-growing.
